What's the benefit of getting all-wheel drive, or AWD?

I was doing some research online for a new car, and I kept coming across all-wheel drive options for many of the newer models. Is there any benefit to getting all-wheel drive, or AWD?

“Although more expensive, all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles can offer more stability and traction than two-wheel-drive cars.
If you live in a wet or snowy climate, AWD can give you better control over the car, especially during storms.
Furthermore, AWD can also provide better stability during everyday driving, especially if you’re in an area with high traffic or you have a bit of a lead foot.
