What's sparking electric vehicle adoption in the truck industry?

I know electric vehicles are slowly creeping into every facet of society. I’ve seen electric cars in the police force, as rideshare vehicles, and for daily use. But as a truck driver, I’m curious as to why electric vehicles haven’t quite permeated the truck industry yet in the same way. Still, I can see the market changing—albeit slowly—and I want to know why.

That’s a good question. Well, the reasons for electric vehicle adoption in the truck industry are twofold: money and environmental regulations.
Primarily, it’s about money. Statistics and real life experiences have shown that electric vehicles—yes, even trucks—are cheaper to maintain. With no fuel costs, a simpler mechanical system to keep an eye on, and a reduction in the cost of operation, there are simply fewer costs to account for. So, an electric truck is financially beneficial.
These changes are also being spurred on by environmental regulations. Look no further than California as a perfect example.
The Golden State has required major trucking companies to pledge that they will move towards zero-emissions fleets within the next 20 years—thereby incentivizing them to invest in electric trucks early.
Still, that doesn’t mean that gas trucks are gone forever. You can still expect low emissions gas trucks to be on the road for the next few years—and to continue being manufactured. But if you’re a truck driver—or have a keen eye—expect to see more and more electric trucks on the road.
