What’s a 2010 Ford F-150’s oil type?

I spent my career as a librarian, and when I retired, I developed a new hobby—trucks. Granted, I’m a 4-foot-11, 98-pound lady, but who says trucks are only for large-armed, long-bearded man-children with a penchant for road-hogging? I picked up a used F-150 for a song, but I know nothing about pickups. What type of oil should be used on a 2010 Ford F-150?

A 2010
Ford F-150’s
oil type is 5W-20 full synthetic oil—specifically, Motorcraft SAE 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend, which is Ford’s recommendation.
Let’s break down Ford’s recommended oil, 5W-20. The numbers stand for the oil’s viscosity, or thickness, at both low and high temperatures. The 5 means the oil has a low viscosity, or thickness, in frigid weather. The 20 means the oil will remain thin at super-hot temperatures. The W stands for winter.
Oil that does well at lower temperatures will help your rig to perform well in the cold and will also do less damage to your engine.
When to change your oil:
  • You’ll want to change your oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, as synthetic oil lasts longer than conventional.
  • Check your oil regularly—the oil should be amber or light brown in color.
  • If your oil is dark brown or black, your engine is making strange sounds, or you smell burning or a smoky odor coming from your engine, change that oil!
