Ah, the ‘Stang. Truly an American classic, and a great place to start with your car history journey.
The
Ford Mustang
was first made in 1964. To be precise, it was April 17, 1964—Henry Ford II unveiled the automaker’s newest creation at the World’s Fair in Flushing, New York.
Named after a WWII fighter plane, the Mustang was a runaway success. One of the first cars to be branded a “pony car” (versus a straight-up muscle car), it’s been featured in countless movies and pop culture references and is a bona fide American icon. Ford built its 300 millionth Mustang in 2004, and they’re still in production today with no signs of waning popularity.
