What year was the first Chevrolet GMT-400 K1500?

I love old trucks. My dad used to have a GMT-400 K1500, but I’m not quite sure what year it was. I was thinking about buying him an old one for his birthday, so I asked him the model year. He only responded by saying that it was the first year of that particular model. When did the first Chevrolet GMT-400 K1500 come out?

The first Chevy GMT-400 K1500 debuted in 1988 as the basic platform for the Chevrolet C/K series, as well as the GMC Sierra. As the fourth generation of Chevy trucks, the GMT-400 is still a fan favorite due to its durability, reliability, capability, and delightfully boxy appearance.
However, that model year of the GMT-400 K1500 introduced some great new features which are still used today, although a bit more modernized:
  • Insta-Trac, which allowed drivers to switch in and out of four-wheel drive at any speed
  • Independent front suspensions
  • 5.7-liter V-8 with 185 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque
  • Crew cab or extended cab options
While the 1988 GMT-400 was susceptible to rust, versions that still exist are often meticulously maintained, so you may be able to find one in good to great condition.
