What will happen if you overfill your engine oil?

I was filling up my engine with oil at home and I think I overdid it. There’s almost definitely too much oil. What will happen if you overfill your engine oil?

Unfortunately, overfilling your engine oil can make a mess and cause issues for your vehicle.
The oil sits too high in the oil pan with too much oil. The fast-moving crankshaft churns it, which aerates the oil. This makes the oil too foamy and light to properly lubricate your engine.
Extra oil can also cause excess engine pressure, leading to seal leaks or gasket failures—both of which are pricey repairs.
To fix the issue:
  • Do a full new oil change
  • Drain the old oil
  • Refill with fresh oil
If you want help, head to a mechanic or Jiffy Lube to have this service done.
