In the past, I’ve saved a ton of money by buying used cars and I’m in the market for one again. The only problem is that I live in a neighborhood that can get a little sketchy at night, so I don’t want my car stolen. What were the most stolen cars in 2020 so I can avoid them?

Surprisingly, 2020 had an uptick in stolen cars, even during quarantine and stay-at-home orders associated with COVID-19. In 2020, 810,400 vehicles were stolen in the U.S., marking the highest amount since 2008. The Ford F-Series, Chevy Silverado, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry were targeted more than others.
With those models topping the list, these were the 10 most stolen cars in 2020:
- Ford F-Series pickups
- Chevrolet full-size pickups (Silverado)
- GMC full-size pickups
You shouldn’t let this list necessarily disqualify a particular car from your consideration. Most thefts happen to older models that don’t have modern anti-theft equipment. If you want to buy one of these cars, consider the following:
- Adding an anti-theft device

- Parking in a well-lit area or a garage
