What type of license do I need to drive an ambulance?

I’ve always wanted to become a medical professional. My goal is to be able to drive an ambulance and help get people the care they need. Do I need a certain type of license to drive an ambulance?

First of all, the world needs more people like you! You’re right to wonder if a standard driving license would suffice. Drivers are required to have an emergency vehicle operator license (EVOC) to operate an ambulance.
To obtain your EVOC, you’ll need to contact the Department of Public Safety in your state to find out where approved training centers are located. Once you get the ball rolling, you can see whether or not you can take the coursework online or in person.
Beyond covering the legal responsibilities of operating an ambulance, you’ll learn about topics including:
Navigation techniques Braking and backing up Parallel parking Crash avoidance Precision skills
Depending on where you live, the state might require you to complete more prerequisites than an EVOC to become an ambulance driver.
It’s common to require a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and a Class-B commercial driver’s license (CDL) so you’re authorized to drive vehicles over a particular weight limit.
With all of those courses under your belt, odds are you may just be one of the safest drivers on the road. Many of the top insurance carriers offer profession-based discounts that reward ambulance drivers with lower car insurance rates.
