What type of car insurance do taxi drivers need?
If I wanted to start working as a taxi driver, what car insurance would I need? Can I use my own car insurance, or is there a special type of insurance I would need?
“You do need specialized insurance when working as a taxi driver, so it’s great you’re thinking ahead!
While coverage may be similar to your personal car insurance, most taxi insurance policies are considered commercial products. You’ll be driving your car for business use, which isn’t allowed under personal auto policies.
Most commercial policies will include liability car insurance plus physical damage coverage. In comparison with a personal auto policy, commercial liability limits are usually higher. Physical damage coverage, or comprehensive and collision insurance, are often included as well.
The taxi service you choose to work for often has its own insurance as well, but adding an additional policy typically will provide more coverage.
Not every insurance company offers policies for business or commercial use, so you’ll need to shop around. You can also check with your current insurance company to find out whether they offer commercial policies.
Before selecting a policy, make sure you inform your agent or the insurance company of your business use. If you end up with a policy that doesn’t cover business use, you won’t have coverage for any accidents or damages that occur while you’re working.
