What type of car insurance do taxi drivers need?

I want to start working as a taxi driver. Can I use my own car insurance for my taxi, or is there a special type of insurance I would need?

Taxi drivers need a specialized type of
car insurance
 coverage that typically falls under the category of commercial car insurance products. Specific requirements for taxi coverage are specified by your state’s DMV. 
Also known as for-hire livery insurance, a taxi insurance policy typically includes the following commercial coverages:
The taxi service you choose to work for may have its own company insurance; however, you may want to purchase a policy of your own for additional coverage.
Rideshare vs. taxi drivers: If you plan on driving for a company like Uber or Lyft, you’ll need to purchase a different type of car insurance endorsement called
rideshare coverage
. This is not the same coverage that you would need to drive for a traditional taxi service.
