What state has the youngest driving age?

My husband is a total car geek, and between him and our four sons, all I ever hear about is cars and racing. My husband pulled me aside and suggested we move to a state where he can teach the boys to drive at an earlier age. Which state has the youngest legal driving age?

In terms of getting a restricted driver’s license, the state that has the youngest driving age is
South Dakota
. You only have to be 14.5 years old to get a restricted driver’s license in South Dakota.
However, you can get a learner’s permit at 14 years old in:
  • Alaska
  • Arkansas
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota
And you can get a full, unrestricted license at 16 years old in:
  • Idaho
  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota
These states are likely your best bet if you want the earliest opportunity to get your teenage boys on the road! And for everyone’s sake, make sure you’re insuring the vehicles they’re driving! Speaking of which, do you know
how letting your teens drive your car will affect your insurance
