What speed is considered reckless driving in Washington, DC?

I recently moved to Washington, D.C. for a job. It’s quite a transition from where I was living in rural Virginia. While I’m starting to adjust to the move, I can’t quite shake the urge to speed when I’m driving. What is reckless driving in Washington, D.C.?

Congratulations on your move! Hopefully, you enjoy your time in the nation’s capital.
If you have a bit of a lead foot, note that no set speed is considered reckless driving in Washington, D.C. However, most officers will issue you a citation for reckless driving for going 30 mph over the posted speed limit.
Instead of using a speed limit to determine what is considered reckless, Washington, D.C. defines it as driving carelessly and heedlessly in willful or wanton disregard for the rights or safety of others or without due caution and circumspection and at a speed or in a manner so as to endanger or be likely to endanger a person or property. The rather loose definition gives law enforcement officers the right to interpret the law as they see fit.
While not as severe as a
DUI
, reckless driving is a misdemeanor that comes with significant penalties:
  • Up to $500 in fines
  • Up to three months in jail
  • License suspension for up to six months
If you just moved to Washington, D.C., you’ll need to update your car insurance to reflect your new address. While you’re at it, why not shop for a better-priced policy with the
