What should you do if there’s a tornado while you’re driving?

What kinds of safety measures should I take if there’s a tornado while I’m driving? I know how to stay safe if I’m already inside, but I don’t know what I should do if I’m in the car. Should I try to outrun the tornado?

If there’s a tornado while you’re driving, try to stay calm! If you’re near a building, seek shelter as soon as possible. If you’re on the open road, you can do one of two things:
  • If there is a low area nearby, like a ditch that is lower than the road, get into the low area. Kneel down with your stomach against your thighs and your hands behind your head to protect yourself.
  • If the surrounding land is flat, remain in your car with your seatbelt fastened. Duck down so that your head and body are both below the
    windows
of your car and cover your head with your hands or a nearby blanket or pillow.
Remain in this position until you hear the all-clear. Never try to outrun the storm as this could put you in even more danger.
If you’re worried about tornados, it’s worth checking to see if they’re covered by your car insurance. If they’re not, or if you just want to find a better rate, the
