What should I do when driving on slick roads?

I just moved to the Pacific Northwest and I’m not used to the road conditions here. With rain and winter weather, the roads are constantly slick. What precautions should I take when I’m driving in slippery conditions?

Congratulations on your move! Driving somewhere new can certainly be difficult.
When driving on slick roads, you should follow these
safety tips
:
  • Give extra room to other motorists. If you’re used to using the two-second rule, extend this to five seconds to give you more time to avoid a collision or come to a stop.
  • Drive at a safe speed, even if it’s less than the posted speed limit. Doing so can also give you additional time to maneuver or brake as necessary.
  • Practice driving on slick roads in low-traffic areas to test your accelerating, turning, and braking abilities.
  • Flip on your turn signals earlier than you normally would.
  • Brake sooner than you would in regular conditions.
  • Keep up with proper car maintenance.
  • Check your tire pressure and tread condition regularly.
These tips should help you stay safe on slick roads!
