What should I do if my home insurance denies a claim?

My home was recently vandalized. I filed a claim with my insurance company and they denied it. I received a letter in the mail explaining their reasoning, but to my understanding, the claim should be covered under my home insurance policy. I can't afford to cover the cost of repairs without a payout. What should I do after my home insurance denies my claim?

I’m sorry to hear your home insurance denied your claim! Home insurance claims can be denied rightfully or in error. If you believe your property claim was denied in error, there are steps you can take to dispute its denial.
You can challenge your denied claim in the following ways:
  • Contact your claims adjuster. Call your
    claims adjuster
and explain why you believe you should have coverage for the damage.
  • File an appeal. An appeal will result in a review of your denied claim. You’ll want to include evidence supporting your position. For instance, documentation that damages were caused by a
    named peril
. The appeals process is outlined in your home insurance policy.
  • Consult a property claims professional. A licensed public insurance adjuster can verify your home insurance coverage, document your losses, and negotiate a settlement with your carrier.
  • Submit a formal complaint. Your insurance provider is legally obligated to process your property claim fairly based on evidence. Otherwise, you can file a formal complaint with your state’s insurance commissioner.
Since you’re unhappy with the claims process with your current home insurance company, now is a great time to explore your options with
Jerry
. A licensed broker that offers end-to-end support, the Jerry app gathers affordable quotes, helps you switch plans, and will even help you cancel your old policy.
