I am a German exchange student and am worried about when I borrow my American host family’s car. The system is very confusing to me! What number is unleaded gas?

The number for unleaded gas is 87 octane.
In most American gas stations, there are usually three octane grades of gasoline for sale:
  • 87 is unleaded
  • 89 is generally considered mid-grade
  • 91 or 93 is typically considered premium
Each state has its threshold for which octane rating is considered “premium”.
Most standard commuter vehicles utilize unleaded gasoline. Be sure to ask your host family which fuel is required before going to the gas station!
