What makes transport driving work dangerous?

Working as a transport driver means you’re always on the road. So the typical hazards you might expect on your daily commute are statistically more likely to occur. Everything from car accidents to driving on poorly maintained roads makes transport driving dangerous.
Of course, the biggest dangers aren’t related to the work so much as the lifestyle. Here are some of the most dangerous aspects of transport driving:
- Obesity: Truck drivers face strict schedules and long drives. That means they spend most of their time sitting in the driver’s seat and only briefly stop for meals. Given the amount of sitting and eating they do, many transport drivers struggle with obesity.
- Hypertension: Another common health problem among truck drivers is hypertension. Since they deal with long trips and only stop along the road, many of their food options are less-than-healthy. Couple that with hours of sitting every day, and you could end up with high blood pressure.
- Dated technology: While driving has become much safer in the past few years, guidance technology and newer safety features rarely appear in trucks. In large part, that’s because the cost of updating the trucks is too expensive. As a result, drivers tend to deal with big machinery that’s outdated and potentially dangerous.
