What kind of gas does a Toyota Highlander Hybrid take?

I recently got a Toyota Highlander Hybrid, and I’ve been adding regular unleaded gas into the tank without even thinking about it. I’ve never owned a hybrid before—do they need a different fuel grade?

Knowing what type of fuel to put into a car can be confusing. Luckily, the
Toyota Highlander Hybrid
is no different than a regular Highlander—it takes regular unleaded gas (87 octane), but you can also use 89 or 91 octanes.
According to the Highlander manual, using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 87 can lead to engine knocking, and persistent knocking can lead to engine damage.
Toyota also recommends the following for the use of gas containing detergent additives:
  • Toyota recommends using gasoline that contains detergent additives to avoid the build-up of engine deposits
  • All gasoline sold in the United States contains minimum detergent additives to clean and/or keep clean intake systems, per EPA’s lowest additives concentration program
  • Toyota strongly recommends using Top Tier Detergent Gasoline—you can find more information on Top Tier Detergent Gasoline and a list of marketers at www.toptiergas.com
Be mindful that
Toyota
also does not recommend using gasoline that contains methanol.
