What Kind of Gas Does a 2021 Toyota RAV4 Take?
My mom just bought a 2021 Toyota RAV4, and wants to know what type of gas she should be filling it up with. Is there any that she should be avoiding?

The type of gas that a 2021
Toyota RAV4
takes is regular unleaded gasoline with an octane number of 87 or higher. Using fuel that’s lower than octane number 87 may lead to engine knocking—which can severely damage your engine in the future. On top of using gasoline with at least octane number 87, there are some types of fuel you should be avoiding:
- Gasoline with MMT (Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese Tricarbonyl): This type of fuel might cause emission issues with your RAV4, so be sure to avoid MMT.
- Gasoline without detergents: Since detergents maintain and clean your vehicle’s fuel system, using gas without it may result in build-up over the years. That’s why you’ll want to do your best to fill your tank at top-tier gas stations that make sure to add a minimum amount of detergent in their fuel. Retailers like BP, Amoco, Walmart, or 7-Eleven might not include detergent, so try to avoid them if you can.
