What kind of fluid goes in a front differential?

I took my car in for an oil change and the mechanic asked if I wanted to have my front differential fluid changed as well. I have no idea what a front differential is – what kind of fluid even needs to go in it?

Your front differential supplies power from the engine to your wheels, controlling how much power goes where so your wheels can turn at different speeds. Front differential fluid is essential to keeping all the working parts lubricated and moving. It should be changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.
If you do want to get it changed, you have a couple of options on what fluid to use:
  • Mineral oil is a cheaper option and does better at lower temperatures, but may need to be replaced sooner.
  • Synthetic oil is more expensive, but it’s a better option for high-performance vehicles
Having a basic car maintenance schedule can save you from any surprise bills when you go to your local service center. But if you’re looking at a large repair bill, it’s crucial to have solid
