The Civic Type R definitely raised a few eyebrows with its triple exhaust pipe design when it was first announced, with two of them larger than the middle one. But this is actually some extremely clever design work from Honda’s engineering team.
The Civic Type R has one exhaust that gets split behind the rear axle, with two big straight flow mufflers and a smaller resonator between them. All of that is done to make the engine note sound beautiful—and it definitely does—without sacrificing the driving experience at highway speeds. Big flow exhausts are just awful to live with day-to-day. Honda fixed that!
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R exhaust sounds absolutely stunning idling, accelerating (of course), and at lower speeds. And at highway, cruising speeds, you’re not getting annoyed and blasting your music to try and hear it over the engine noise. That Honda accomplished this with no moving parts is simply incredible.
