What is X mode in a Subaru?

I was looking up all the features of my Subaru Outback and came across something called X mode. I don’t think my Outback has it, but I’m curious about what it is. What exactly does X mode do for Subarus?

X-mode is a standard feature in all
Outbacks
and an optional one in
Foresters
. While it may seem like a mysterious name for a complex contraption, X-mode simply switches on five traction controls to help drivers handle sticky situations. Here are the car components impacted by X-mode:
  • Throttle: X-mode regulates torque so it starts slow and ramps up to higher power levels than are usually possible for the Subaru Outback and Forester.
  • Transmission: Typically, throttle and gear go hand-in-hand, but X-mode keeps the transmission at a low setting to raise engine power.
  • Wheel drive: While Outbacks and Foresters typically come equipped with all-wheel-drive, they aren’t always performing at peak level. X-mode syncs the four wheels so you get more power and coordination between your front and back wheels.
  • Dynamic wheel control: This feature of X-mode helps the car regulate wheel control by maximizing traction on whichever wheels are slipping.
  • Descent control: So long as you keep your car under 12 mph, X-mode can help you maintain ample traction for steep downhill drives.
While X-mode can go a long way in keeping you safe on the road, it can’t keep you financially protected in the case of an accident. Luckily, the
