What is traffic on Interstate 5 like?

I’m planning an international road trip from San Diego to Vancouver. While I’m going to take the scenic route on the way back, I think I’m just going to use I-5 on the way up. What’s the traffic like on Interstate 5?

Stretching 1,381 miles from the Mexican to Canadian border, Interstate 5 is the fastest way to traverse the West Coast. Like most other interstates, traffic on Interstate 5 is sparse in less populated areas, but it can get congested near San Diego, Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle.
Since you’re starting in
San Diego
, you’re probably well aware of the traffic. However, the stretch of I-5 through
Los Angeles
is notoriously congested no matter what time of day, so taking it in the early morning (think 3 a.m.) is the best plan unless you’re stopping there.
Other options to bypass traffic include:
  • Taking I-405 or I-605 around Los Angeles
  • Hopping on I-205 around
    Portland
  • Using I-405 around
    Seattle
