What is the Toyota Prius's gas mileage?
I’m interested in reducing my carbon footprint, so I want to buy a car that gets great fuel economy. I’ve read that the Toyota Prius gas mileage is one of the best around. What can I expect in terms of fuel economy from the Toyota Prius?

However, the fuel economy you get from a Toyota Prius depends on the trim level you choose. Currently, Toyota offers eight trim levels with various options and features. The fuel economy for each one is as follows:
- L Eco: 58 mpg city; 53 mpg highway
- LE: 54 mpg city; 50 mpg highway
- LE AWD-e: 51 mpg city; 47 mpg highway
- XLE: 54 mpg city; 50 mpg highway
- XLE AWD-e: 51 mpg city; 47 mpg highway
- Nightshade Edition AWD-e: 51 mpg city; 47 mpg highway
- Nightshade Edition FWD: 54 mpg city; 50 mpg highway
- Limited: 54 mpg city; 50 mpg highway
Behind the exceptional Toyota Prius gas mileage is a hybrid powertrain, which pairs a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with either a 202-volt nickel-metal hydride battery or a 207-volt lithium-ion battery. The Prius also uses regenerative braking, which recharges the battery when you’re braking to a stop, hence the better gas mileage in the city.
