What is the South Dakota speed limit?

I’ve always wanted to visit South Dakota to see bison, soak in Mt. Rushmore, and see Sioux Falls. Now that I have some vacation days built up, I’m going to finally put my plan into action. I just want to make sure that I don’t get a speeding ticket on my road trip—what is the speed limit in South Dakota?

If you want to avoid a speeding ticket, note that the
South Dakota
speed limit is 80 mph maximum on rural stretches of interstate. However, the 80 mph on the interstate lowers to 55 mph to 70 mph near the major metropolitan areas of Sioux Falls, North Sioux City, and Rapid City.
You should also be aware that the speed limit changes depending on where you’re driving in other areas of the state:
  • 65 mph maximum on state highways and secondary highways unless otherwise posted
  • 25 mph on city streets and in business and residential areas
  • 15 mph in school zones and obstructed intersections
Most of South Dakota is sparsely populated and remote. So before you tour the Mount Rushmore State, consider
towing and labor coverage
for your car insurance. It’s an add-on policy that protects you just as roadside assistance would. To get the best rate and save some extra cash for your journey, download the
