Virginia
drivers can choose to forgo car insurance, but they must pay a $500 fee to the DMV if so.
Just beware: choosing not to purchase insurance means that you will have to pay out-of-pocket for any damages you cause in an accident.
If you choose to buy insurance (which we recommend), you must meet the following minimums:
  • $25,000 in bodily injury liability per person
  • $50,000 in bodily injury liability per accident
  • $20,000 in property damage liability per accident
  • $25,000 in uninsured motorist bodily injury per person
  • $50,000 in uninsured motorist bodily injury per accident
  • $20,000 in uninsured motorist property damage per accident, with a $200 deductible for hit-and-run accidents
