What is the left lane for on the highway?

I’m on a road trip with my family, and my brother insists on poking along in the left lane of the highway. I keep telling him that it’s dangerous and also just kind of rude, but he won’t stop. Settle an argument—what is the left lane for on the highway?

So, the traditional family car games of Mad Libs and “I Spy” have broken down—we’ve all been there! Broadly speaking, the left lane on the highway is for passing, particularly in areas where the speed limit is 65 mph or higher.
While it might be tempting to linger in the left lane, it can create an unsafe situation when cars are forced to pass you on the right. In some areas, it might also get you a ticket—there are some stretches of highway where the signs indicate that all traffic must stay in the right lane, except to pass.
And as you pointed out, camping in the left lane is also not the most considerate thing to do. Safe and happy travels!
