What is the Illinois speed limit?

I’m moving from Kentucky to Chicago. I have to travel almost the entire length of Illinois, so I want to make sure I don’t get a speeding ticket. What’s the speed limit in Illinois?

Congrats on your upcoming move! If you want to travel through the Land of Lincoln without a ticket, note that the
Illinois
 speed limit is a maximum of 70 mph, but only on rural stretches of the interstate.
If you’re anywhere else in the state, pay attention to posted speed limits or use these laws as guidelines when you don’t see a posted speed limit in Illinois:
  • 65 mph on state highways in rural areas
  • 55 mph on the interstate in urban areas
  • 30 mph in urban areas, business districts, and residential areas
  • 20 mph in school zones
