What is the hit-and-run investigation process in Florida?
Someone hit my car a few days ago and they didn’t stop or leave their information. Will a police investigation actually catch the person who did it? I don’t understand how they could possibly find them.
The police will usually only do an in-depth hit-and-run investigation in extreme circumstances—like if someone was injured or killed.
Law enforcement will typically look to a few different sources for information:
Witnesses: Anyone who happened to be nearby when the accident occurred could have valuable insight.
Security footage: Security cameras on nearby buildings may have caught the accident.
Scene of the crime: If the police get details about the vehicle the culprit was driving, they can search for damaged cars that fit that description near where the accident took place.
Keep in mind: Oftentimes, however, it’s difficult to gather enough evidence to convict someone of a hit and run.
