What is the driving age in North Dakota?

My kid is about to enter high school and wants to get a learner’s permit. But we just moved to North Dakota and are not familiar with the state’s license requirements just yet. What’s the driving age in North Dakota?

What an exciting time in your child’s life! The driving age in North Dakota is 14 years old for a learner’s permit, and your child will have to apply in person at a local ND Drivers License office or take the knowledge test online. Make sure they have all the necessary documents—and once they pass their vision and knowledge tests, they’ll be issued a learner’s permit.
The knowledge test is based on North Dakota’s Noncommercial Driver’s License Manual which acts as a study guide and goes over the rules of the road and general driving safety.
A North Dakota learner’s permit allows teenagers to operate a vehicle only if supervised by a licensed driver sitting in the front seat. Your child can get a restricted license at age 15 or a full driver’s license at age 16 if they:
  • Hold their learner’s permit for at least one year
  • Complete a formal *driver’s education** course
  • Practice 50 hours of driving
  • Pass the road test
After your teen gets their driver’s license, you must decide whether to get them their own car insurance or add them to your current policy. For competitive quotes and the lowest rates, try car insurance comparison super app Jerry!
