Learning to drive is an important and exciting milestone! The driving age in
Mississippi
is 15 years old for a learner’s permit, but you can start driving as soon as 14 years old if you’re enrolled in a driver’s education course. You’ll have to be at least 16.5 years old to apply for a driver’s license.
Like most states, The Magnolia State operates on a graduated licensing system to advance unlicensed drivers from a learner’s permit to an intermediate license, and, finally, a full driver’s license.
To apply for a learner’s permit, you must:
  • Be 15 years old
  • Bring a valid form of ID, proof that you are actively enrolled in school (or have already received your GED), a signed release of school records, and an application signed by a parent or guardian
  • Pass a vision test and written knowledge exam
You can apply for a learner’s permit at age 14 if you’re enrolled in a state-approved driver’s education course. This course must include at least 30 hours of classroom time and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction, as well as explicit instruction regarding how to behave at a traffic stop.
Note that, until turning 15, your permit can only be used to drive under the direct supervision of a driving instructor.
