What is the driving age in Massachusetts?

I’m 16 and my family is going to move to Massachusetts soon. I haven’t started learning to drive yet. What are the driving age restrictions there?

Good luck with the big move! The driving age in
Massachusetts
is 16 years old. Like most states, the Bay State operates under a graduated driver’s license program.
At sixteen, you can apply for a learner’s permit to practice with a licensed driver aged 21+ in the passenger seat. To obtain a permit, you’ll simply need to pass a vision exam and written knowledge exam. To move to the next step, you must:
  • Hold the permit for at least 6 months
  • Log 40 hours of supervised driving time
  • Take an approved driver’s education course—this will include at least 30 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of instruction behind the wheel, and 6 hours of in-car observation
  • Pass a final written exam and complete a road test to get your junior operating license
A teen with a junior operating license can drive without supervision, but there are some restrictions:
  • You cannot drive with passengers under the age of 18 (with the exception of siblings)
  • You cannot drive between the hours of 12:30am and 5:00am (unless accompanied by an adult)
  • You cannot use a mobile phone while driving, even if it’s hands-free
These restrictions will be lifted once you turn 18, allowing you the privileges of a full license.
