What is the driving age in Italy?

My daughter and I have been planning a big move to Italy in a year, and my daughter is 16 with a valid driver’s license. She’s hoping that when we get to Italy, she’ll be able to drive there at the age of 17. How old do you have to be to drive in Italy?

Currently, the driving age in Italy is 18, although you can drive a moped before that. If your daughter has a valid license in America, she will be able to bypass the learning/practice period and take the practical driving exam as soon as she turns 18. Still, she may want to consider taking driver’s education in Italy.
Many people who learn to drive in Italy take driver’s education for a couple of reasons:
  • Coaching directly addresses tested material.
  • The practical test must be taken on a dual-controlled vehicle which can be provided by the school—otherwise you’ll have to rent one.
  • Almost anywhere, drivers who have taken driver’s education get lower car insurance prices.
Just remember that it’s illegal for your daughter to drive in Italy at all while she is under the age of 18. Another thing to consider is that if your daughter is going to be driving a vehicle that’s shared with you,
this is likely going to affect your insurance
prices.
