What is the driving age in Idaho?
I’m turning 15 soon and want to get my driver’s license. When can I start driving in Idaho?

Happy early birthday! The driving age in Idaho is 18 years old for an unrestricted license. However, you can start the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program when you are 14 and a half. There are four basic steps to the program:
- Supervised Instruction Permit, or SIP. You’re eligible to apply for an SIP at the age of 14.5 and you must have your SIP before enrolling in a driver’s education course.
The next step is enrolling in a driver’s education course. Anyone under the age of 17 who is applying for their driver’s license must complete this course first. Idaho public schools offer driver’s education programs to everyone aged 14.5 to 21—even if you are not enrolled in that school. You can begin this course as soon as you get your SIP.
Once you complete your driver’s education, the next step is to apply for an underage driver’s license. You must be at least 15 years old to do this. Keep in mind that an underage driver’s license will come with some driving restrictions.
Finally, once you turn 18, you’ll be able to apply for your unrestricted license. If you are already 18 when you begin the process of getting a driver’s license, you will not have to complete the GDL. Instead, you’ll just have to pass the required DMV tests.
