What is the driving age in Germany?
My kids and I are planning on spending the summer in Germany so that they can get to know my side of the family. While we’re there, my son really wants to go explore the country on his own. He’s started to practice driving here in the U.S., but I’m not sure about the rules in Germany. How old do you have to be to drive in Germany?

Home of the fabled Autobahn and companies like Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen, Germany is one of the international epicenters of the driving world, so it’s no surprise that your son would be getting excited about the opportunity to drive there. The driving age in Germany is 17 years old to start learning, but you have to be 18 years old to obtain a driving license and drive by yourself.
In order to get a license at 18 in Germany, you must:
- Complete driving school
- Pass the written and practical exams
Even if you have a valid driver’s license from outside of Germany, it is illegal for anyone under 18 to drive unless they have a provisional German license. Also keep in mind that if your son starts driving your car, you’re likely going to have to talk to your
insurance
