What is the cost to renew a driver's license in Michigan?
I was doing my taxes recently and I needed to input information from my driver’s license. Fortunately, I got money back—and also realized that I need to renew my driver’s license! I’ve never had to do that before. How much will it cost to renew my Michigan driver’s license?

Getting money back on your taxes is always a great feeling! With your tax return, you shouldn’t have any problem renewing your driver’s license either. The cost to renew a driver’s license in
Michigan
ranges from $18 to $45.As of May 3, 2023, all U.S. citizens must have a REAL ID to fly domestically. If you rarely travel by plane, you can save a little money by opting for the standard Michigan driver’s license. If you want to fly after the federally mandated date, get the REAL ID-compliant Michigan driver’s license, also known as a Michigan enhanced driver’s license.
The prices for these driver’s licenses are as follows:
- Standard license renewal: $18
- Standard license renewal for an expired license: $25
- Enhanced license renewal: $38
- Enhanced license renewal for an expired license: $45
Michigan also makes license renewal easy, offering four options for residents:
- Online athttps://dsvsesvc.sos.state.mi.us/TAP/_/
- At a Secretary of State self-service station ($3.95 surcharge)
- At your nearest Secretary of State office (DMV)
- By mail
If you want to switch from a standard driver’s license to an Enhanced Driver’s license, you must apply in person.
If you’re eligible to apply by mail, you should receive a renewal notice in the mail. All you need to do is fill out the included renewal application, make a check out to the State of Michigan for $18 or $38, and mail it to:
