What is the best year for a used Honda Civic?

I just moved to a new house, which I’m very excited about…but that also means a much longer commute. My current vehicle guzzles gas, so I’m planning on getting a more affordable daily driver soon. I’ve heard the Honda Civic is a good option, but what years are the best?

You’re right, it’s hard to find a more efficient car than the trusty Honda Civic! They’re affordable, long-lasting, safe, and fuel efficient—no wonder they’re so popular. That being said, not all Civic models are created equal. To help you make your decision, here are the best years for a used Honda Civic:
  • Year: 2020; Typical listing price: $19,700 The 2020 Civic—or any year model since—is the best of the best since it’ll have the most updated tech, safety features, and comfort.
  • Year: 2019; Typical listing price: $18,100 The 2019 Honda Civic earns up to 32 mpg, making it one of the most fuel-efficient choices out there (other than hybrids). This year model also earned top scores for owner satisfaction and reliability.
  • Year: 2014; Typical listing price: $10,200 With excellent fuel economy, a responsive drivetrain, and a spacious interior, the 2014 Civic earned some of the highest reliability ratings and owner satisfaction scores amongst Civic models. This model also received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award.
  • Year: 2011; Typical listing price: $7,000 As far as the older and more affordable models go, the 2011 Civic earns great reliability ratings—plus it’s easy to drive.
  • Year: 2005 ; Typical listing price: $4,600 If you’re sticking to a tight budget, look for a 2005 Civic with reasonable mileage. This year model offers one of the best ratios of reliability-to-affordability. On top of that, the 2005 Civic got solid gas mileage and safety ratings.
