What is the best year for a used BMW 3 Series?

I’ve been a long-time fan of the BMW 3 Series, but I’ve never been able to afford one until now. That said, I don’t want to buy a new one—I’d rather have someone take on the depreciation. Is there a particular year that’s best for the BMW 3 Series?

The BMW 3 Series has been around for almost 50 years, so narrowing down the best year isn’t all that easy. If you want a mix of reliability and quality, the best year range for a used BMW 3 Series is from 1999 to 2005—otherwise known as the E46 series.
This fourth-generation edition of the BMW 3 Series is cheap to maintain, one of the most reliable BMW models ever produced and had a number of other features ahead of its time including:
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Satellite navigation
  • Up to 360 horsepower
  • Available all-wheel drive
  • Six-speed manual transmission
And on top of all of this, the BMW 3 Series models from this era are
cheap to insure
, which makes a used 3 Series from this time period an even better choice.
