What is the best way to rent a car for a family road trip?
I have a family road trip coming up and want to rent a car. What should I know about renting a car with small children, one of them is still a baby.

“Road trips are amazing, but traveling with small children can come with some surprising challenges.
First, select the size vehicle that will fit you and your family comfortably. Even if you drive a mid-size at home, you will probably have tons of luggage and baby gear, so think about upgrading to a full-sized car or SUV.

Speaking of baby gear, how much do you want to bring with you? Depending on where you are traveling and your comfort level, you can rent almost anything for your littles, such as:
- Stroller
- Cribs
- Baby gates
- Backpacks
- Baby tubs
- Room monitors
- High chairs
Before you leave home, check for baby gear rental options for your final destination online at places like Babys Away. Some car rental agencys will also have items you can rent if you ask.
Here are a few more things to consider:
- How potty trained are your children?
- Can you bring a portable baby potty along with several changes of clothes?
- Make sure you have extra garbage bags and cleaning supplies in the car.
Also, your kids will probably snack non-stop. Therefore, you will want to keep dirt and crumbs down to a minimum to avoid an additional interior cleaning fee when you return the rental car.
Another money-saving tip is to use your car insurance policy for rental car coverage and skip paying the insurance fee from the rental agency. Check your policy, if you have full coverage, it should extend to your rental car automatically.
