What is the best route from Ohio to the Outer Banks?

I’m hoping to go on a big road trip with a few friends, but I’ve never planned one before. I don’t know how to plan for the best stops or even which highways to pick. Exactly which path is the best route from Ohio to the Outer Banks?

Here are the three most popular routes to get you from
Ohio
to the Outer Banks:
Central route (fastest):
  • Head east on US-33.
  • Transfer to
    I-77
    S.
  • Take
    I-64
    E all the way to NC-168, which takes you straight to the Outer Banks.
Northern route:
  • Start heading north on
    I-71
    .
  • Merge onto
    I-76
    .
  • Continue on the highway, transferring from I-76 to
    I-70
    E to I-270 S to I-495 S to
    I-95
    S.
  • Take exit 291B to NC-168.
  • Follow this road all the way to the Outer Banks.
Southern route:
  • Take US-33 E to I-77 S.
  • When I-77 splits in North Carolina, take
    I-74
    .
  • Continue onto US-52 S.
  • Take exit 109A to US-421 S
  • Merge onto
    I-40
    E, then continue onto I-440 W.
  • Take exit 14 to Highway 64 East, and follow this road all the way to the Outer Banks.
