What is the best route from Chicago to Maine?

My partner is insistent on a trip to the coastal region of Maine, so I’m surprising them with a road trip for their birthday. What is the best way to drive from Chicago to Maine?

A
road trip
is such a great and thoughtful birthday gift! The best route from
Chicago
to
Maine
follows I-90 most of the way then follow I-290, I-495, and I-95.
However, if you have valid U.S. passports you can take a fun detour through Canada with the following route:
  • Take I-90 E to I-94 E up into
    Michigan
    .
  • Take M-14 E then I-96 E to the Ambassador Bridge in
    Detroit
    .
  • Cross the bridge into Canada and head to ON-401 E.
  • Take the exit for ON-403 E then follow Lincoln M. Alexander Pkwy/Red Hill Valley Pkwy.
  • Merge onto Queen Elizabeth Way/Garden City Skyway then take ON-405 E to the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.
  • Cross the bridge into the U.S. and take I-190 S and I-290 E to I-90 E.
  • Follow I-90 E into
    Massachusetts
    then take I-290 E, I-495 N, and I-95 N into Maine.
The drive takes 17 hours, give or take, so make sure to stop overnight along the way and double-check your
