What is the best Mustang engine of all time?
I’m a big fan of Ford Mustangs, and I know a lot about their history. I’m not as well-versed on the performance side of things though. I know there are a lot of differing opinions on this, but what’s the best Mustang engine ever made?

history buff, you know they were designed as pony cars rather than performance vehicles, but that is what they’ve sort of morphed into over the years—a performance car for the casual driver.Part of the reason for that is that the Mustang has possessed some really excellent engines over the years! There are many contenders, but one that just edges out the others is the Cobra Jet 428.
The Cobra Jet 428 was the engine in the 1961 Mustang Mach 1—and it wasn’t even well-promoted. Ford at the time was promoting a more expensive model (the Boss 429) as their fastest model, but the Mach 1 with the Cobra Jet 428 consistently outperformed it in real-world road tests.
The Cobra Jet 428 helped the 1969 Mustang Mach 1 match Mustang’s racing model’s 5.5 seconds 0-60 time and surpass the racing model’s top speed at 121 miles per hour.
Nowadays, the Mustang Mach 1 with a Cobra Jet 428 is a rare, highly collectible vehicle. If you have one, hang on to it! You should also insure it.
