“Welcome to the world of insurance! Insurance can be a great carrier choice and there are many avenues in which to choose.
There are three primary careers within insurance:
- Service
- Sales
- Claims
Each company may have different departments within each category.
You may be able to work with a company like
State Farm
or Farmers
, where you can be an independent agent. Independent agents have a contract with an insurance carrier directly and are responsible for their own:
- location
- licensing
- staff
Independent agents are also known as captive agents since they can only sell insurance for one company.
They are also considered captive agents; however, you are joining a team. The company will usually:
- train you
- help you get your insurance licenses
- have you work from their location, like in a call center
A broker is an independent agent that works for the customer, not an insurance company. A Jerry agent sells and services policies from several different carriers to find the best deal and is not beholden to any carrier in particular.
Pay and commission structure vary from company to company, so using sites like LinkedIn or Glassdoor can help you select the pay scale and company culture that suits you best.”
