What is the 2017 Nissan Altima’s oil type?

I just got my first car and my cousin is going to show me how to do an oil change. He told me to go pick up the motor oil, but I’m not sure how to tell what kind it needs. What does a 2017 Nissan Altima take?

The 2017
Nissan Altima
needs 0W-20 fully-synthetic oil, which you should be able to find at any auto supply shop or big-box store. But the amount of motor oil you’ll need for your oil change depends on what type of engine your car has—if your Altima has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine then you’ll need 4.9 quarts of oil for your oil change, but if you have a 3.5-liter V6 engine then you’ll need 5.1 quarts.
It’s great that you have your cousin to help you learn how to do an oil change—but it’s also a good idea to watch some online video tutorials to get familiar with the basic steps:
  • Step 1: Find a level surface where you want to work, and use a floor jack to lift the car up.
  • Step 2: Place your oil catch pan under the car.
  • Step 3: Here’s where it gets messy! Unscrew the plug and move it out of the way—but be careful! Oil will pour out of your car quickly and it could be hot.
  • Step 4: Let all the oil drain out into your catch pan, then replace the plug.
  • Step 5: Move the catch pan under your oil filter, then remove the old filter, and replace it with a new one.
  • Step 6: Lower the car back down, then lift the hood, and remove the oil fill cap.
  • Step 7: Refill your oil using a funnel.
  • Step 8: Replace the fill cap, and run the engine for a few minutes to check for leaks.
If there’s no leakage after a few minutes, you’re good to go! Learning some basic car maintenance is a useful life skill and can lead to some major savings when it comes to labor costs.
