What Is The 2015 Subaru Forester’s Towing Capacity?

I am so excited—I bought a small trailer! The plan is to park it deep in the Georgia woods and then take the kids on a Deliverance-inspired canoe trip (our little one is a huge Burt Reynolds fan)! But I’m worried my Subaru isn’t strong enough to tow the trailer, with the canoe on the roof—so, what is the 2015 Forester’s towing capacity?

Well as much as we here at Jerry love talking canoe trips, there is a whole lot to unpack here.
First off, your 2015 Subaru Forester’s towing capacity has a limit of 1500 pounds. That means you’re likely able to tow items such as small campers, some trailers, a variety of lightweight or fiberglass boats, and potentially a grizzly bear, if you have one as a pet (and considering the canoe trip you’re about to embark upon, this would not be surprising).
Anyways, here are some tips to follow when towing up to 1500 pounds with your Subaru Forester:
  • Don’t push it: Towing up to 1500 lbs with your Forester can stress your brakes and your engine, so watch your speed and be extra careful!
  • Braking room: Leave extra room for braking—towing a big load will make your vehicle even heavier, meaning it will have more momentum and will need more room to stop safely.
  • Downshift: When slowing down while towing a load, you might find that downshifting your Forester as you brake will help the engine arrest your car’s speed, and thus help to slow you down.
  • Practice reversing: Reversing with a trailer attached to your Forester takes practice, especially since the trailer will move in the opposite direction from where you are turning the steering wheel.
  • Protect fingers and toes: When you’re attaching a camper, boat, or other object (especially the bear), watch out for your fingers and toes. If something falls on your feet (because you’re wearing your Birkenstocks), or your fingers get caught in the winching gear, you can suffer serious injuries.
  • Check your car: Before attaching anything to your Forester, check the vehicle over to ensure everything works—the tow hitch, the brake lights, all fluids, hoses, belts—to prevent any issues.
Whatever you’re towing, make sure your Forester is protected by a robust and affordable
