I’ve read that cops can issue a reckless driving ticket in North Carolina based on their own judgment. It seems like such a gray area—I hope I never have to deal with that. What is considered reckless driving in North Carolina?

is defined as a willing disregard for the rights and safety of others by way of driving at a speed or in a manner that endangers people or property.
A few different driving behaviors could cause you to get a reckless driving ticket. These include (but are not limited to):
  • Speeding more than 15 mph over the limit
  • Street racing
  • Illegal passing
  • Running a stop sign/stoplight
  • Aggressive swerving
  • Tailgating
In North Carolina, a reckless driving ticket is a Class 2 misdemeanor that stays on your permanent record. Other consequences of a reckless driving ticket include:
  • Up to 60 days in jail
  • A fine of up to $1,000
  • 4 points on your license (wherein 12 points in a 3-year period results in license suspension)
