What is loss of use on renters insurance?

I’m about to get my own apartment for the first time! I’ve narrowed my options down to just a few now; a couple of the landlords are telling me that to sign a lease with them, I’ll have to get renters insurance. So, I’ve started looking into what it is and what it covers. “Loss of use” stuff is confusing to me. What is loss of use on a renters insurance policy?

Great question, and it’s equally great that you’re researching renters insurance early on! Loss of use, also known as additional living expenses (ALE) coverage, will cover reasonable living expenses for you if you’re temporarily displaced from your rental home.
It’s important to know that the reason for your displacement has to be listed as a
named peril
, like a fire or windstorm. You can review named perils in your insurance policy.
If covered, there are several living expenses that your loss of use coverage may pay for:
  • Hotel room or apartment (if you’re staying in an apartment, it will likely only be covered up to your home’s rent price)
  • Food delivery or restaurant meals
  • Furniture rental
  • Extra gas if your commute becomes longer
  • Boarding costs for a pet
  • Storage facility costs
Keep in mind your expenses have to be considered within reason to be covered. If you’re not sure about a purchase, it’s best to check with your insurer first.
