What is fusion cover in home insurance?

I’m confused about fusion coverage. My sister said I should get it as she has it on her home insurance. I can’t find it in any home insurance policies. She lives in Australia, so I’m not sure if it’s something we have in the US? What does fusion cover mean in a home insurance policy?

Firstly, good job on researching your coverage options!
Finding the right policy
can be time-consuming, so kudos to you for putting in the effort.
Fusion coverage—also known as motor burnout coverage—usually means damage caused by wiring and electrical currents. In a home insurance policy, this typically applies to burnt-out electric motors in appliances. For example, if a power surge from a lightning storm destroys your refrigerator’s motor, you’d have coverage.
Here are some of the appliances that fusion coverage might cover:
  • Washers and dryers
  • Fridges and freezers
  • Air conditioners
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Ceiling fans
Fusion coverage typically doesn’t cover:
  • Wear and tear
  • Age-related damage
  • Any appliance covered by a warranty or guarantee
That said, fusion coverage isn’t a term used in US home insurance policies, which is why you can’t find it!
In the US, equipment breakdown is a similar coverage. However, it’s not always standard on home insurance policies, so you may have to add it as an endorsement or additional coverage. As you continue to research policies, check for equipment breakdown in the coverages section or ask the agent if it’s possible to add.
