What is engine oil?

I’m familiar with the process of checking and changing your engine oil, but I have no idea what it actually is or the purpose it serves, so…what is engine oil anyways?

Great question! As a general rule, engine oil—or motor oil—is a lubricant consisting of base oils that are then enhanced by various dispersants, detergents, additives, and viscosity improvers. Most motor oil is roughly 70-90% crude oil or natural gas and 10-30% additives, which serve a variety of purposes.
Motor oil’s primary purpose is to lubricate the engine, but also serves to cool, clean, and protect the engine, as well as reduce friction. It’s used in all internal combustion engines and serves to fortify the inner workings and moving parts, helping them avoid damage and corrosion.
Modern synthetic engine oil, however, also helps protect your vehicle’s emissions system, operates hydraulics, improves engine fuel efficiency, and more—solidifies its place as one of the most important components of your vehicle.
