What is chip tuning for an Audi S8?
I want to increase my Audi S8’s performance. I’ve heard that a chip tuning can do just that, but I don’t really know what a chip tuning is. So I guess I’m asking, what is a chip tuning? And can you do it to an Audi S8?

Excellent question, thank you for asking! So, a chip tuning is where you either reprogram or replace the memory chip that controls your car’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Doing this can absolutely boost your performance! And yes—you can tune an

S8. Be careful; improper tuning can seriously damage your engine. Modern cars are largely regulated and controlled by internal computer systems. One of the most important systems that affect driving and performance is the ECU. It regulates fuel injection and several other critical systems.
The ECU, in turn, is governed by a programmable read-only memory chip which the manufacturer installs with coding that determines its behavior. Replacing or reprogramming this chip is referred to as ECU tuning or “chip tuning.” You can tune your Audi S8’s ECU chip in one of three ways:
- Downloading tuning software from the internet, plugging your laptop into the car, and installing the software.
- Replace the ECU chip with a new one that has different software already installed
- Purchasing a tuning upgrade device. These are designed to plug into the OBD port and install their software directly.
Unless you have some experience with programming, it’s best to stick to buying a tuning device. With one of these, all you’ll have to do is plug the device into your Audi S8 and initiate the install. It’s almost as easy as saving money on your
