What is an unprotected left turn?

A friend of mine just took his road test, and he warned me that I need to be ready to make an unprotected left turn if I want to pass my test. Can you please explain what exactly an unprotected left turn is?

An unprotected left turn occurs when you make a left turn at an intersection without the assistance of a dedicated green arrow. Instead, you must yield to oncoming traffic, as they have the right of way.
To safely and successfully navigate an unprotected left turn, remember the following guidelines:
  • Approach the intersection using the leftmost lane.
  • Only enter the intersection when you can complete the turn safely.
  • Keep your wheels straight to avoid being pushed into oncoming traffic in case of a rear-end collision.
  • Proceed to turn left only when you have a clear right of way, ensuring no oncoming vehicles or pedestrians.
Mastering the technique of making an unprotected left turn will greatly increase your chances of passing your road test. Best of luck!
